At last, nation-wide ban of weed and feed fertilizers, albeit only two years down the road. Paul Tukey calls it "a great step in the right direction." Health Canada is focussing on landscaping principles rather than health issues, thereby hoping to minimize adverse response from the industry. The announcement was made a few days ago, on February 2, 2010. There seems to have been very little publicity in the press.

[...] What started in some municipalities and the province of Alberta as a provincial ban on weed and feed fertilizers in 2008, has spread to the whole country of Canada. Effective at the end of 2012 all weed and feed fertilizers will be banned. Some municipalities in Canada have been moving to ban the use of weed-and-feed, but those bylaws weren’t as powerful as province-wide legislation that can actually stop people from buying the product. Now with the ban across Canada, the dangerous practice will be stopped. Click HERE for the Health Canada explanation of the ban. Top five reasons not to use a weed and feed fertilizer. Thanks and a tip of the hat to Jeff Lowenfels for the Safe Lawns news lead. [...]

[...] A Chemical Reaction provides an insightful and scientific look at the various concerns mounting around lawn chemicals. It follows the studies and Supreme Court case that eventually lead to the banning of various lawn pesticides and herbicides in one town, then several municipalities and eventually the entire Provence of Quebec.
