Job Openings: Glenstone Seeking Arborist, Plus Irrigation/Turf Tech

Glenstone is maintained using all-organic protocols and products for its turf and tree programs.

As part of our ongoing support of the organic transformation of the grounds at the modern art museum known as Glenstone, SafeLawns is be helping to build a world-class staff for the burgeoning facility.

The facility is currently looking for a staff arborist and an irrigation/turf technican, ideally to be in place by early 2013. Both job postings are below. IRRIGATION / TURF TECHNICIAN

Glenstone is a modern art museum set on 160 acres in Potomac, Md. Founded in 2006, the organization seeks seamlessly to blend its art, architecture and landscape for the inspiration and educational benefit of the citizens of Maryland and the world.
As an organization that strives for excellence and value in its every endeavor, Glenstone seeks only highly qualified candidates with the keenest sense of personal motivation, attention to detail, organizational skills and professionalism.
Desired candidates should have a 2- or 4-year degree in Turf Management or related field. Candidates with an extensive irrigation background without a Turf Management degree will also be considered.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Irrigation/Turf Technician will work with landscape architects, contractors, irrigation specialists and staff to oversee water management of thousands of newly purchased trees and shrubs, in addition to hundreds of transplanted trees, as well as meadows, turf, understory plantings and art features.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
• Solid time management, organization and prioritization skills
• Ability to create reports to support water use
• Responsible for all irrigation operations on property for turf, trees, bedding and understory plants and art work
• Knowledge of tools, methods and materials in an all-organic grounds maintenance program
• Identify, diagnose and make recommendations in regards to turf health within the organically managed system
• Install/troubleshoot controllers, valves, heads and drip systems
• Working knowledge of pumps, valves and controllers
• Grade and prepare soil for seed or sod
• Occasionally supervise a small labor force for special projects
• Perform other duties as required by immediate supervisor, the grounds superintendent and/or assistant
IDEAL SKILL SET
• Prefer Rainbird irrigation experience
• Ability to work under pressure
• Familiar with safe operation of mowers, equipment, tools and products unique to the trade
• Able to work weekends and holidays when needed
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• 2 years related experience
• Experience with a Rainbird irrigation program
• Possession of a valid driver’s license
• Ability to physically lift 75 pounds

 

LEAD ARBORIST

As an organization that strives for excellence and value in its every endeavor, Glenstone seeks only highly qualified candidates with the keenest sense of personal motivation, attention to detail, organizational skills and professionalism

Desired candidates should have a 2- or 4-year degree in arboriculture, urban forestry, forest ecology, plant pathology, horticulture or similar. A minimum of five years of educational and professional experience, along with ISA certification, is preferred.

POSITION SUMMARY

The lead arborist will work with landscape architects, contractors, irrigation specialists and staff to oversee planting and maintenance thousands of newly purchased trees and shrubs, in addition to hundreds of transplanted trees in accordance with ISA, ANSI and OSHA standards for quality and safety. In addition, the lead arborist shall consistently evaluate and maintain existing manicured trees and shrubs as well as protected forestlands across the 170-acre campus.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Solid time management, organization and prioritization skills
  • Ability to create reports to monitor and predict tree & shrub health
  • Hands-on tasks include planting, removal, limbing, pruning, fertilizing, watering of trees and shrubs and understory species management, including the implementation of an exotic invasive species management plan.
  • Knowledge of tools, methods and materials in an all-organic grounds maintenance program
  • Identify, diagnose and make recommendations in regards to tree & shrub health within the organically managed system
  • Occasionally supervise a small labor force for special projects
  • Perform other duties as required by direct supervisors, the grounds superintendent and/or assistant

IDEAL SKILL SET

  • Experience in all aspects of tree & shrub planting, removal and maintenance
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Familiar with safe operation of chain saws, equipment, other tools and products unique to the trade
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • 5 years related experience in course and fieldwork.
  • Knowledge of native and regionally specific plant palettes and colonies
  • ISA certification
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to physically lift 75 pounds
  • Able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays when needed
