Johnny’s Selected Seeds in Albion, Maine, runs the most extensive trials of any significant seed company in North America. The company’s technicians have lots of goals in evaluating crops — everything from yield, to drought and disease resistance, to days to maturity — but by far the No. 1 criteria is taste. The founder, Rob Johnston, is a good friend of mine and I can tell you from first-hand experience that he’s obsessive-compulsive about picking vegetables for great flavor.

      Unfortunately, you really can’t protect your lot or your lungs from the applications of lawn pesticides, which will drift in your direction if the wind is blowing that way.
