Florida Moves to Repeal Fertilizer Restrictions

IN A STATE WHERE THE WATER TABLE is often less than a foot below the surface, several Florida counties have enacted restrictions on lawn fertilizers containing high levels of nitrogen, especially during the rainy season when runoff is most prevalent.

Environmentalists nationwide have applauded the move as sound stewardship of Florida’s all-important shoreline resource. If a recently elected Republican legislator gets his way, however, those laws would come off the books. As part of a disturbing “pro-business” assault on the environment that has taken place since the recent election, a new bill proposes to place all fertilizer regulation exclusively at the state level:
