SafeLawns New Jersey Group to Hold First Educational Meeting

We suggested a while back that folks ought to start state chapters of in the U.S. and provincial chapters in Canada and we’re delighted to announce the first organization to the starting line, SafeLawnsMontclair, will hold its first educational meeting later this month with an all-star lineup.

A forum titled “Non-toxic Lawn Care Practices” will be held Oct. 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Hear what makes conventional lawn care harmful to our heath and environment. Learn safe and simple ways to take care of your lawn. This is your opportunity to listen, ask questions, share stories. The local experts include:

• Gray Russell, Environmental Affairs Coordinator, Department of Environmental Affairs,
Town of Montclair. He provides information to residents about recycling, composting,
grass-mulching, water conservation, and many other municipal environmental issues. His
company, Green Living Solutions, a home energy and sustainable lifestyle consulting
group, helps homeowners to save energy and money, and reduce their carbon footprint,
right in their own homes and gardens. Gray has helped thousands of people to discover
the many benefits of greener gardening over the past twenty years, and has been featured
on TV shows including Martha Stewart “Living” (CBS); “Live” with Regis & Kathy Lee
(ABC); and the Home & Garden Network.

• Mara Silgailis is a local resident with a PhD in Developmental Psychology. She is
interested in the effects of pesticides on humans. Mara is on the Cedar Grove
Environmental Commission, as well as the Board of Directors of the New Jersey
Environmental Federation. Mara has been practicing organic gardening since the 1980s.
After witnessing a pesticide application outside her son’s elementary school, she was
instrumental in having the Cedar Grove school board adopt Integrated Pest Management
(IPM) for its school properties.

• Jose German, a local resident and owner of Green Harmony Now, a Montclair-based
company that provides sustainable lawn and garden landscaping services. Jose is a master
gardener, a member of the Ecological Landscaping Association (ELA), the Northeast
Organic Farming Association (NOFA) and Member of the Society of Ecological Restoration
International. He started doing organic and eco friendly gardening at the age of 17 (he is
now 54). Since 2000 he has helped many Montclair residents to switch from conventional
to organic and eco friendly lawn care practices and gardening.

The event will be held at the Van Vleck Garden House; 21 Van Vleck St., Montclair.
