Advertising Claims

I get asked nearly every day about the latest, greatest advertising claims. This year the topsy turvy tomatoes are all the rage. My take: If Mother Nature intended tomatoes to grow upside down, they would already. Besides, you can grow tomatoes upside down if you want to and still not pay $19.95 for the privilege. It’s a gimmick.

The other big advertising push is for instant grass, year-round grass, no-mow grass. Blah. Blah. Blah. People will sell anything. The truth here is that there are numerous species of grasses and some grow fast, some grow slow. Some grow tall. Some short. All grasses have the same needs of sunlight, water and decent soil — at least the grasses that we want for our lawns. Most of the recent claims of no mow or low are simply a spin on work that Neil Diboll has been doing for decades at www.prairienursery.com. He probably knows more about this subject than anyone.
